An insulated roof is not a common feature on a two horse float, and it is the reason to look at this Merhow. A bare aluminium roof over a horse in an Australian summer radiates heat straight down; insulating it makes a measurable difference to how the horse arrives.

Roof insulation and radiant heat

Most of the heat load in a parked or slow-moving float comes down through the roof. Insulating it does more for the horse than any number of side vents, because vents only work when air is moving. It also cuts condensation, which otherwise drips onto the horse’s back overnight on a cold trip.

Angle load in a short box

Loading horses on the diagonal fits two of them into 3.96 m without either being cramped. Most horses settle well on an angle because they can brace across the body rather than fore-and-aft. The trade-off is a slightly awkward walk-in for a horse that has only ever loaded straight.
