Container Home Office – Converted Shipping Container Studio

The idea behind this conversion is simple: take one long side out of a one-trip 20 ft container and replace it with full-height double-glazed sliding patio doors. What you end up with is a garden office that feels like a room rather than a box, with integral Venetian blinds sealed inside the glazing so there is nothing to dust and nothing to break.

It is aimed at Australians working from home who have run out of spare bedroom – and at anyone wanting a studio, hobby room or quiet retreat at the back of the block without going through a full extension.

Insulation and finish

Walls carry 50 mm Dritherm Earthwool with 100 mm loft insulation in the ceiling, then 12.5 mm plasterboard prepared for a skim coat or the finish of your choice. That level of insulation is what makes a steel box workable through a Perth or Brisbane summer rather than merely survivable.

Electrical fit-out

• 3 x LED strip lights
• 4 x double 13 A socket outlets
• 2 x 32 A isolators, pre-run for air conditioning units

The isolators are the detail worth noticing: adding split systems later is a straightforward job rather than a rewire. Final connection and certification to AS/NZS 3000 is done on site by a licensed Australian electrician.

Siting and approvals

A 20 ft unit needs a firm, level base – concrete pads or a compacted pad – and truck access to set it down.
