A used 40ft high cube: 9ft 6in tall, around 76 m³, and the standard starting point for any conversion that has to be stood up in. Sold wind and watertight.
The extra foot of height is why people pay the difference. A used 40ft high cube stands 9ft 6in tall and gives roughly 76 cubic metres inside, and once you line and insulate a container that headroom is the difference between a room you can stand up in and one you cannot. Workshops, offices, container homes, retail pop-ups and gyms all start here rather than with a standard-height unit.
It also takes standard pallet racking, mezzanine floors and ceiling-mounted services that a standard container simply will not accommodate.

The other use for used high cubes is plant: mini excavators, scissor lifts and compaction gear that catch the ceiling of a standard container. Plant hire yards buy these in numbers for exactly that reason.
A high cube on a tilt-tray sits noticeably higher than a standard container, and the obstruction is almost never in the yard — it is a carport, a gate, a branch or a service line on the way in. Walk the route. Heights for every size are in our dimensions guide.
These are ex-shipping-line containers sold wind and watertight. Paint is patched and faded, corrugations are dented, and the structure is sound. If you need a clean finish for a conversion that will be seen, price a one-trip high cube instead — see the high cube range and the used container category.
