A used 20ft flat rack — open steel deck, no walls, and tie-down points throughout. The way boats, transformers and packaged machinery travel when nothing else will take them.
A 20ft flat rack is a heavy steel deck with an end frame at each end and nothing in between. It exists for loads that cannot be got through a door — boat hulls, transformers, packaged plant, steel fabrications, anything over-width. Loading is from above or from the side, and lashing rings set into the side rails, the deck and the corner posts take the restraint.
Ends are supplied fixed or collapsible depending on the individual unit. Collapsible frames fold flat so empty racks stack, which is why they are common in the hire and forwarding trade.

Flat racks are individually plated, and the plate on the unit you are allocated is the document that governs stacking and shipping limits. Do not plan a lift or a stow from a general specification — have your rigger and forwarder work from the actual plate.
If your load is within the height of a container’s walls and you want weather protection, an open top is the better buy — the tarpaulin closes it up. Flat racks are for cargo that is over-height, over-width or both. Compare in the used container range and containers for export.
