A used 20ft open top: removable bows and a weatherproof tarpaulin in place of a steel roof, plus a swing-away door header. For machinery that has to be craned in from above.
Some loads cannot go through a door. A transformer, a press brake, a piece of drill rig, anything long or awkward that has to be craned in from above needs a container with no roof — and that is what an open top is. In place of the corrugated steel roof there are removable bows and a weatherproof tarpaulin roped down over them, so once the load is in the container closes up and travels or stores like any other.
The door header above the cargo doors also swings clear, which gives you the option of feeding a long item in end-on rather than lifting it over the wall.

Loading an open top means a crane or a Franna over the top of the container. Book the lift and the delivery together and make sure the crane can stand where it needs to — that is usually the constraint, not the container. Lashing rings are fitted for tying the load down once it is in.
If your load is taller than the container walls, an open top will not help: the bows and tarpaulin have to go on for transport and they also contribute some of the structure. Over-height cargo goes on a flat rack, which has no roof and no sides at all.
A 40ft open top is stocked for longer loads, along with 20ft and 40ft flat racks. See the 20ft container range and used container stock, and check internal clearances in the dimensions guide.
