At 8.53 m this ROM 550 crosses into the serious end of our enclosed trailer range, and the Premier Package specification follows it there: insulated aluminium walls and ceiling, 1,016 mm of carpet up the walls, a 50 amp electrical package and twin roof vents.

The carpet is not decoration. It deadens the drumming that makes a long tow in an aluminium box tiring, and it stops a dropped spanner ringing through the trailer at six in the morning.

Insulation and Australian heat

An uninsulated aluminium trailer parked at Queensland Raceway in February becomes an oven, and everything stored in it — tyres, fluids, electronics, adhesives — suffers. Insulated walls and ceiling plus two roof vents keep the interior closer to ambient, and the air-conditioning prep means a unit can be added without cutting into finished panels.

Bogey wheels and driveway crossovers

Two bogey wheels sit under the rear. On a long trailer with a beavertail, the rear underside is the first thing to touch down on a steep gutter crossing or a service station ramp. Bogey wheels take that contact instead of the frame.
